Baboon hamadryas

The baboon hamadryas ( Papio hamadryas ), or hamadryas , is a Babouin arid areas which meets Red Sea on both sides and in the horn of the Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia Djibouti).

This species of baboons was crowned among former Egyptians, one of the representation of the god Thot is the hamadryas, the baboon with coat.

The sexual dimorphism is marked. The adult males weigh a score of kg, they carry a coat of long clear hairs which arrète with the basin. the face is glabrous with a muzzle long and angular, the jaws show canines of 4 cm. The females are much smaller (10kg) with the brown and short hair.

Sexual maturity occurs towards 4-5 years, gestation lasts approximately 6 months and the females have small approximately every 22 month. The lifespan in nature is estimated at a score of years.

Note : at present (2005), a certain number of specialists consider only one: Papio hamadryas , of which the others Papio would be only S.
