Baal Shem Tov

Rabbi Israel Ben Eliezer , born in 1698 with Okop (Podolie) - died the May 22nd 1760 with Medzhybizh, will become famous under the name of Baal Shem Tov (the Master of the Good Name) that is to say the “ BeShT ” by acronym.

He is the founder of the movement of the Hassidim or Piles (Hassid in the singular), which will extend at the beginning in Russia and Poland, and will gain the whole world at the time of the 20th century. This lesson will be gathered in the works “Keter Shem Tov” and “Tsvat Haribach”. It will be followed by thousands of disciples of which its successor Rabbi Dov Ber. One of these disciples Rabbi Yaacov Yossef haCohen of Polnoï will publish one of the first books of Hassidout “Toldoth Yaacov Yossef”, like “Ben Porat Yossef”, and “Tsafnat Panéah”. The only son of Baal Shem Tov is Rabbi Tsvi.

In 1746, the Besht reveals with its disciples that, during a spiritual rise, the Mashiah (Messie), guaranteed to him that it would be revealed with humanity when its lesson (the Hassidout) is spread in the whole world. It will start from Mezebozh and will visit many Jewish communities of Russia and Eastern Europe where it will diffuse the lesson of the Torah, of the Talmud of Babylon and the Kabbala.

The teaching of Baal Shem Tov is perpetuated through very many currents of the hassidism, among which most known are Habad, Brasslav, Satmar, Belz, Vishnitz and Gour, to evoke only the greatest dynasties.

It is told that Baal Shem Tov received dreams the visit of it of the Redeemer, Mashiah. He asking when it would come on Earth, this one would have answered: " when your sources spread " outside;. Whereas the large traditional currents of Hassidisme evolve/move in relatively closed circles, two currents remain faithful to the very broad spirit of diffusion of the lesson of Baal Shem Tov: the movement of the hassidims of Brasslav and that of Loubavitch (Habad).

The hassidout Brasslav, faithful to the lesson of Rabbi Nahman de Brasslav is especially established in the United States and in Israel, or it allures many new followers.

The Movement Loubavitch continues the teaching of Baal Shem Tov by the diffusion of the Hassidout Habad through the whole world thanks to the 3000 emissary sent by the Rabbi of Loubavitch, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.
