Baal
Baal or Ba' Al (Hebrew: בַּעַל , בָּעַל , Báʿal , Báʿal , Báʿal , which means lord ) - Bēl in Akkadien and בעלת Baʿalat (phenician) or בַּעֲלָה ( Baʿalāh , in Hebrew) with the female one - is a god Phénicie N which, under the Ramessides, is assimilated in the Egyptian Mythologie to Seth and with Montou.
The Baal term is not in the beginning monk: it indicates a sizeable being, the lord or the Master, sometimes the husband. Many names of kings are thus preceded by this particle. The word was used besides only at honorary ends; the example Ba `lāh hāri' šôn (the ex-husband, the widower) shows the very broad range of this mot. a rabbi particularly recognized was called Ba `Al Shem .
Baal is a generic name of a god, accompanied by a qualifier which reveals which aspect is adored: Baal Marcodés, god of the crowned dances; Baal Shamen, god of the sky; Baal Bek, solar Baal; and especially, Baal Hammon, the terrible god of the Carthaginians. One can also quote Baal-Zebub, which gave Belzébuth. Thus, each area had its god, his local Baal.
Baal became the punic name of many gods of Semitic origin whose worship was celebrated since the OJ until the Roman epoch. It is in particular the title given to Yahvé: Bealiah (more precisely bə `' alyâ ), which means Yahvé is Baal . It is about the point of view of the Hebraic religion of a blasphemy, because calling into question the unicity of God, since the Bible regards Baal foreigners as false gods.
Its name - the Master or the husband - is found everywhere in the Middle East, from the zones populated by the Sémites to the colonies phenicians, of which Carthage. It is invariably accompanied by a female divinity (Astarté, Ishtar, Tanit), even if it is him even hermaphrodite, just like Ishtar.
Baal counted an important temple with Émèse (current Homs) in Syria, whose priesthood belonged to the family of the Bassianides. In 218, its high priest became emperor of Rome under the name of Héliogabale, thanks to a relationship with the Sévères by the women. Héliogabale imposed its worship to the Romans.
Worship
The worship of Baal is condemned in the Bible. It is described as the worship of golden calf in the Livre of Dared. Some made a bringing together between Baal and the Diable, devil being in the beginning a simple word before Christian mythology. In the bible it does not have any precise identity, but gathers all the divinities who could divert the people of Yahvé of the right way. This is why in the book of the judges each history starts with: “The people of Yahvé were diverted of the Lord and adored Baals and Astartés. ” In the same way Astartés gathers the divinities referring to Ishtar, the goddess of Babylon.
Among ritual the chaldéens, it sometimes happened to sacrifice children to obtain the favors of the divinity. That to which the Bible testifies, in particular in the book of Jérémie:
- Jérémie 19:5 They built high places with Baal, to burn their children with fire in holocausts with Baal: What I neither had ordered nor prescribed, Which had not come to me to the thought.
This worship is associated the priesthood, and of the sanctuaries on each hill, called tops places. Inside was icons and statues of Baal, and outside the stone columns (probably the symbols Phalliques of Baal), of the crowned posts which represented Ishtar, and of the furnace bridges with incense. Male prostitutes, males and females, were useful sexually on the high spot, and practiced also the sacrifice of children.
This worship was also associated in the spirit with certain celestial bodies (sun, stars).
