Baïkal Masterly Love

The Baïkal Masterly Love (Russian: Байкало-АмурскаяМагистраль , Baïkalo-Amourskaïa Maguistral , BAM ) is a railway line in Russia, crossing the Eastern Siberia and the the Russian Far East, connecting the lake Baïkal to the river Amour. BAM with a length of: 4234 kilometers (: 2305 miles) and is located at approximately 500 km in the North-East compared to the railroads of the Transsibérien. BAM was built like strategic alternative route with this last, which is particularly vulnerable close to the border with the China. The costs of the BAM are estimated at 14 billion dollars of the United States, it was built by using special and durable ways since most of its route was built on Pergélisol.

History

The first sections of Baïkal Amour Masterly were built in several times thanks to the prisoners of the Gulag. That of Taïchet to Bratsk was built in the years 1930  ; it mobilized 180  000 prisoners and made: 10000 dead. Part of the Eastern layout was the work of the prisoners of Gulag during the years 1944 - 1946.

However, the essence of the BAM was built between 1972 and 1984 and mobilized human and financial resources record for the time. In order to cause the enthusiasm of the young people and to attract them towards these regions with the severe climate, one implied actively the recruiters of the Komsomol and one called this great project “  pompeusement; The large building site side-soviétique  ”. Because of the economic stagnation ( zastoï ) of the failing USSR, the project was a true financial drain.

The widening of the BAM continues nowadays. In prospect, it should join the town of Iakoutsk in the Eastern Siberia.
