In 1947, Borussia Dortmund gains a division of Westphalia. The following year Dortmund evolves/moves in “Western Division”, one of the 5 divide which will play a mini-championship of which the winners will clash then in a Cut to reach under “Champion of Germany”. Dortmund gains the first 3 editions: 1948,1949 and 1950 of Western Division but lack titles at the time of the Cut. In 1953, Dortmund still gains its division but lack the Cut in phase of group. It should be waited until 1956 so that Dortmund realizes finally to double it by gaining its division and the Cut crowning it Champion of Germany (1955/1956) . The following year, the club repeats its to double Division/Championnat and takes part in its 1st Cut of Europe : Cut of the Clubs Champions (League of the Champions) where the BVB stops into 1/8 of final vis-a-vis Manchester UTD (0-0; 2-3). One year later, during season 1957/58, the yellows and black reach only one sad 5th place of their Western Division but will save their season in C1 where they were eliminated in ¼ from Final vis-a-vis Milan AC (1-1; 1-4). Dortmund will still finish Vice-champion in 1961 then Champion of Germany in 1963 although not having gained its division (2nd).The first professional edition
It is as a champion of Germany in title that Borussia Dortmund takes part in the first edition of the new formula of the Bundesliga become professional for edition 1963/64. However the club of the the Ruhr will finish the season only in the 4th place but reached on the other hand, the ½ Final of C1 where it falls vis-a-vis Inter Milan (2-2; 0-2). The following year, the club gains its first cut of Germany (DFB Pokal) and is thus qualified for Coupe of Europe of the winners of cuts. In 1966, the Borussia Dortmund gains C2 in the prolongations vis-a-vis the FC Liverpool but the club fails behind Munich 1860 in championship in spite of the excellent performance of the attacker Lothar Emmerich which finishes better striker of the championship with 31 achievements. The following year the German gunner repeats and gains again the title of better striker with 28 units but its club misses the title again, finishing in the third place…
The fall
From 1968, the club knows its blackest hours, playing the maintenances until being finally relegated in 1972. The club of Westphalia will remain three seasons in the second German division. During this period, the club knows its first “sponsor”, the town of Dortmund itself, which finances to him its stage of the Westfalenstadion for World cup 1974. Returned in the elite in 1976, the club does not play any more the first parts, finishing until beginning of the year 80' in medium of table in spite of the presence of the leader Manfred Bürgsmüller who holds the record of goals of the club with 135 units. But as from 1983, the club finds its old demons and fights against relegation during three seasons in spite of the appearance of an young talent, Michael Zorc.
1986, the pivotal year
Continental becomes the new sponsor of the club which recruits a promising defender, Thomas Helmer. Dortmund has finished in the 4th place, its best classification for 19 years! This place enables him to join again with Europe and the dortmunders reach the 1/8e the final one, eliminated by Bruges. If the team passes beside her season 1987/88, that which follows, sees the blossoming of a new hero to the club, Andreas Möller. This year, 1989, Dortmund joins again with the victory by gaining the Coupe of Germany and in the tread the Super German Cut . The following year, Möller and his again finishes them in the fourth place and reach the 1/8e the final one of C2. This same year, the BVB gains with three consecutive recoveries recent the Coupe DFB Hall into 1990,1991 and 1992! In 1990/91, the results are however disappointing. The BVB finishes in the 11th place and was eliminated in 1/8e from final from C3 by Sampdoria (1-1; 0-2). Horst Köpel must resign, Ottmar Hitzfeld takes the orders.
The Hitzfeld effect
For this season 1991/92, Dortmund recruits the attacker Stephan Chapuisat. Young Switzerland takes its marks immediately and registers 20 goals over the season. The club breathes santée and finishes in the second place behind the VfB Stuttgart… with the difference in the goal! This same season the multitude at the stage sees a heavy increase passing in 33.000 to 41.000 spectators. The following year, the leader of play Andy Möller will be supported by a new wonder recruited of Inter, Matthias Sammer. The club finishes only in the 4th place but atteind the final of the UEFA Cup after having eliminated Saragossa, the ACE Rome and having atomized Fiorentina (7-2). The BVB falls heavily finally vis-a-vis the Juventus of Turin (1-3; 0-3). The club stabilizes and confirms its regularity in the championship while finishing once again in the 4th place and reaching the ¼ of finale in UEFA falling against the Inter Milan (1-3; 2-1).
Sammer, the new emperor
Season 1994/95: Although amputee of the departure of Helmer to the Bayern Munich, Dortmund always taken along by his Sammer craftsmen, Möller, Zorc and Chapuisat has gained its 1st German championship since the introduction of the professionalism awaited for 32 years. The Super Cut of Germany is also gained vis-a-vis the Borussia Mönchengladbach. The festival however “will be wasted” by a new final elimination in ½ of UEFA by… Juventus. The following year, 1996, powerful international German, Jürgen Kohler, manpower reinforces with Dortmund which has preserved its championship of Germany (and Super Cut of Germany ) and takes part in its first Coupe of Europe of the clubs champions for more than forty years, finishing its course in ¼ of finale. During this doubled, Matthias Sammer is elected twice better player of the German Championship and it accepted the Ballon of Gold France Football after having been the craftsman of the vicoire of Germany during the Championnat of Europe of football (Euro). He is regarded as “Kaiser of Dortmund”.
The sacring in a revenge
If Borussia does not gain its third consecutive championship, it signs at the time of season 1996/97 its more high efficiency in gaining very coveted Ligue of the Champions in the stage of the rival of Munich vis-a-vis Juventus Turin, pet peeve of the club in UEFA. International German Karl-Heinz Riedle sign quickly one doubled in first period. In second period, Del Piero consequently gives again hope with the inhabitant of Turin per hour of play follows a true seat of German defense. Hitzfled replaces Chapuisat, exhausted, and launches the young person Lars Ricken. Paying choice since the medium registers the 3rd goal of its club 10 seconds after being entered concerned! After the Cut of the Winners of Cut (C2), the BVB gains its second cut of Europe and becomes the 3rd German club to obtain the trophy after the Bayern Munich and the Hamburg SV. La' Coupe Intercontinentale' is then gained with the detriment of Cruzeiro (2-0). This season sees the number to still support to increase until arriving to 51.000 spectator on average.
End of the generation of gold
Seriously wounded Sammer, must take a premature retirement. During season 1997/98, Dortmund reaches the final ½ of League of the Champions in spite of the weak 13th place. The following year, it is with the turn of Ottmar Hitzfeld to leave the team for Bayern Munich, it is replaced by Skela which leads the team until the 5th place and gains one 4th Cut Hall in 1999 , last season for Michael Zorc which becomes the player more wrapped club (463 matches). In 2000, Dortmund falls once again with the classification (11th) and left by Galatasaray in 1/8e finale UEFA. Andreas Möller leaves the club after 9 of services to the club. In order to start again the team with the conquest of Germany and Europe, the club returns out of purse at the end of the season. This same year, the club returns in G14 in company of Bayern Munich like representative of German football.
Foot business
With the stockmarket entry, the new sponsor (E one), the strongest multitude in his stage (60 000 spectator) and powerful the right TV of Kirch, the BVB launches out in a massive and expensive recruitment to the image of Tomáš Rosický, Torsten Frings, Ewerthon, Jan Koller, Marcio Amoroso or Evanilson. However, the results are not as prolific as what the club by this heavy investment hoped. If Dortmund reaches with three consecutive recoveries the podium since 2000 and gains its 5th championship in 2002 (under the coaching of Matthias Sammer), it fails in final of UEFA Cup the same year vis-a-vis the Feyenoord Rotterdam. In 2003, the club is eliminated with the second tower from the League from the Champions.
The crisis
During season 2003/04, Borussia Dortmund had already had to announce a net loss of 67,7 million euros which it had justified in particular by a fall of the receipts drawn from the televised retransmissions ( bankruptcy of Kirch… ) and of the sales of players. The actions of the BVB out of purse fall of 80% passing 11 euros the action with 2 euros. But, among the reasons which brought the prestigious club at the edge of the bankruptcy, the sale of its historical stage appears, Westfalenstadion, a strategic error of the leaders of the club which costs each year 17 million euros of rent. With the beginning of the year 2005, the repurchase partial by the club of its stage, whose rent weighs heavily on its finances, as well as a term of payment for the rents in 2005 and 2006. This operation allowed the survival of the club and its license for the first division of Bundesliga 1. It is however in the adversity that the supporters of Dortmund were shown most present to become most numerous by far to assist with the meeting of the sick club at the Westfalenstadion with an average of 77.000 spectators since 2004 . With regard to the results, the club pulled by Bert van Marwijk, since 2004 also, goes down year by year to the German classification and leaves in the first turns of cuts UEFA and Intertoto.
End of the financial crisis…
At the time of season 2006/07, the club has posted for the first time for 3 years an positive assessment grace in fact to the fall of the wages (- 25%) as its new sponsor RAG who offers to him 12,5 million euros per year . But the “yellows and black” lost meanwhile the majority of their key players (Tomáš Rosický and David Odonkor) to be left there and carried out many wage cuts. The club was found in the zone reléguable with its 17th place at the time of the 28e day, which had not arrived any more since about thirty years. Dortmund nevertheless saved relegation and finished in the 9th place grace amongst other things to its striker high-speed motorboat Alexander Frei. The club was comforted however by depriving its historical and local rival, Schalke 04, of the title thanks to its victory 2-0 at the time of the penultimate day.In spite of the arrival of Thomas Fraud at the post of trainer at the end of last season, the club evolves/moves in the soft belly of the classification, far from the leader.
