BSI Group
BSI Group , for British Standards Institution , is a British group of services, which includes/understands four branches:
; BSI British Standards
- It is the organization of standardization recognized with the the United Kingdom. Created in 1901, under the name of Engineering Standards Committee , this organization published more 17 000 standards to date.
- These standards are in the form British Standards XXX, or BS XXX (XXX being the number of the standard).
; BSI Management Systems
- It is an organization of certification specialized in the standards ISO 9001 (Quality assurance), ISO 14001 (Environnement), OHSAS 18001 (Hygiène and safety), BS 7799 (safety of information), BS15000 (management of the computing systems for the Food safety)
; BSI Product Services
- This organization helps the companies to develop products in conformity with the legal requirements and the standards. It delivers the quality control mark “Kitemark” as well as certifications EC.
; BSI Inspectorate
- this organization, acquired by BSI Group in 1998, is given the responsability to inspect the companies and to carry out analyzes of conformity. Its fields of expertises cover the Métallurgie, the Minerais, the Pétrochimie and the Agro-alimentaire.

April 26th 1901: first meeting of the Engineering Standards Committee , a meeting of industrialists; the first measurements relate to the standardization of the structures of steel (reduction of the number of references from 173 to 113) and of the rails (reduction of 75 references to 5), involving an economy estimated at a million pounds sterling per annum;
it is historically the first national organization of standardization created; - 1902 : first financial participation of the British government; this one approves and supports its efforts;
- during the First World War, the committee takes care of standardization for the construction of the planes; during the war, the number of committees of standardization (thus of covered fields) passes from 60 to 300;
- 1918 : the committee becomes the British Engineering Standards Association (BESA);
- 1921 : formation of the committee of the marks ( Mark Committee ) charged to certify the marks which follow the standards; the first certified company is the General Electric Company in 1926;
- 1929 : the role of the BESA is fixed by a royal Charte;
- 1931 : following the integration of a committee of chemical industry (under the impulse of the Association off British Chemical Manufacturers ), the BESA becomes the British Standards Institution (BSI);
- during the Second world war, because of the German Bombardment S, the BSI publishes standards on the material of Lutte against the fire and the shelters (indication, bags of jutte anti-rotting), like, within the framework of the logistics of war, the conditioning of the material (which arrived in bad condition) and of food (cans, one estimates that induced a saving in 40 000 tons of steel the first year);
- 1946 : creation of the ISO;
- 1955 : creation of the Advisory Council one standard for To consume Goods ; in addition to the standardization of the industry and reduction of the costs and waste, the BSI deals more and more with the information of the consumer;
- August 1987: when an ISO standard is adopted by the BSI, it carries from now on a double classification BS XXX/ISO YYY
- 1991: creation of BSI Inc. with Reston, Virginia, the United States;
- 1994 : when an ISO standard or is adopted by IT by the BSI, only remainder the ISO number or IN, for example standard BS 5750 becomes standard BS IN ISO 9000;
- 1998 : modification of the royal charter; the institution buys the Inspectorate group like CEEM, a company states-unienne specialized in the formation with management, which consolidates its position of international group;
- 1999 : BSI Group buys Rocky Mountain Geochemical (undertaken states-unienne of noble metal expertise), Mertcontrol (organization Hungarian of inspection and certification), and International Standards Certification Pte Ltd (organization of certification based to Singapore);
- January 2002: purchase of the branch ISO certification of KPMG (consultant states-unien);
- 2003 : purchase of BSI Pacific Ltd, to ensure the penetration of the market of certification in China; purchase of 49% of the shares of British Standards Publishing Limited (BSPL);
- 2004 : purchase of LW Cargo liner Survey AB, a Swedish company of inspection and control, and KPMG Certification B.V., connects Dutch certification of KPMG.
