History of some buildings of BNP Paribas to Paris

The Gilded House

With the site of the Gilded House, rose formerly the Choiseul-Stainville hotel where lived Mrs Tallien. Demolished, the hotel was replaced by the Hardi coffee, famous under the Empire, then by the Gilded House, Parisian restaurant during nearly one half-century celebrates. Even if the date of 1839 is reproduced on the frontage of the building, one is unaware of when the current building of the Gilded House was built exactly, thus called because of the balconies which always decorate its frontage. In 1853, Alexandre Dumas installed at the ground floor the drafting of his newspaper “the Musketeer”. It is as at the Gilded House as the last exposure was held of the Impressionists in 1886. At the end of the Second Empire, the establishment declined and a post office took the place of luxurious restoring. In 1976 BNP undertook the restoration of the frontage of the building and installed its international division there. The Gilded House shelters today offices, an auditorium and a room of market of BNP Paribas.

The Orangery

The street of Antin is traced in 1717 and the construction of the Hotels which constitute the Head office of BNP Paribas today is spread out of 1715 to 1725. The principal hotel of the 3 rue d'Antin, where the Orangery is, owes its existence with a member of Parliament, Etienne Bourgeois of Boynes, general treasurer of the Royal Bank. His/her son, who was Minister for the Navy, remained a long time in these places. Sold in 1754, the hotel falls in heritage with the Roller of Mondragon and becomes Hôtel of Mondragon then. During the Revolution, the building is seized like “national good” and the town hall of the II° district of Paris becomes tenant about it. It is in the room of the marriages, with a few meters of the Orangery, which was celebrated in 1796 the union of Bonaparte and Joséphine de Beauharnais. Mondragon yielded the Hotel to the Bank of Paris in 1869. Born from the fusion of the Bank of Paris and the Bank of Credit and Deposit of the Netherlands, the Bank of Paris and the Netherlands, today BNP Paribas, establishes its seat there as of its creation in 1872. In the years 1960, the Orangery was built on the site of the court of the hotel of Mondragon to accommodate the visitors of the Bank, and became the heart, even the symbol of BNP Paribas.

The Holy Market Honore

In 1613, on the current place of the Holy Market Honore, Marie de Médicis inaugurated a monumental convent for Dominican known as “Jacobins”. During the Revolution, the convent was closed and replaced by the club of the Jacobins where the revolutionists around Robespierre met. After the demolition of the buildings, one built at the 19th century four houses intended to accommodate a market which a fountain supplied with the pump of Chaillot decorated. In the years 1960, this unit was destroyed to be replaced by a carpark. At the end of the concession of the carpark, the town hall of Paris entrusted a new project to Ricardo Bofill, architect Catalan whose workshop is established in Barcelona, Paris and New York. Paribas seizes this opportunity of rationalizing its establishment in the district of the Opera and joins the project. In 1997 the construction of a building of clear glass is completed which, joining again with the tradition of the XIXe century of the roofed passageways bordered of shops. The Holy Market Honore currently shelters the offices of the Bank of Financing and Investment (BFI) of BNP Paribas.
