BMW series 5

The BMW series 5 is a range of cars Berline S and station-wagon S designed by the German manufacturer BMW. This series takes the succession in 1972 of the 1500,1800 and 2000 (E12).

Four generations of series 5 to date followed one another:

  • E12 of 1972 to 1981
  • E28 of 1981 to 1988
  • E34 of 1988 to 1996
  • E39 of 1996 to 2004
  • E60 since 2004

Worked out starting from the preceding generation, E34 is worked and larger. The starting offer is consisted of the 518i (4 cylinders), 520i, 525i and 528i (6 cylinders).

In 1983 the first diesel motorization one appears 2,5 L of 115 ch.

After a restylage in 1987, a sporting version called M5 is created in 1988. This version is equipped with one 6 cylinders of 315 ch.

The range engine is supplemented or re-examined in 1990, the 6 cylinders adopt 4 valves per cylinder. The version touring (station-wagon) comes to enrich the range in 1990, as well as the integral transmission in option.

Several innovations appear with the catalog in 1992, initially the replacement of the 3,5 L by one 3 L, new a 2,8 L and V8 on the 540i. M5 is not remains and receives about it a new block of 3,8 L and 340 ch.

The diesel four-cylinder motor, appeared in 2000 and resulting from series 3, proves to be peaceful and economic version of access. The road, precise and dynamic behavior, benefits from suspensions sophisticated out of alloy of aluminum, and an exceptional rigidity frame, plus 80% compared to the preceding model. In fact, BMW will not judge useful to increase rigidity on the model according to E60.

The models with manual box are characterized by a precise and fast gear shift lever. The clutch pedal is often criticized for its long race. The model with robotized automatic box (steptronic) is rented for its softness and allows intact performances whereas consumption is in moderate rise. But it misses a little promptness in the rétrogradages. The direction, with assistance hydraulic, precise and is ideally gauged. Some regret the lack of recall around the point medium, as well as the exaggerated size of the wheel.

Reliability

E60/E61

The E60 is the fifth generation of series 5 and is marketed since August 2003. At the beginning of 2007 this series 5 underwent light a restylage concerning mainly the shields before and back as well as a panel instrument packed of new materials to the aspect more developing. The BMW F10 / F11 are the fifth generation of BMW Série 5.
