BB 8700

Description

The 20 BB 8700 are locomotive electric resulting from the transformation of BB 8500 (or BB 88500) of the first under-series for the growth into Maurienne.

Indeed, whereas DC 6500 took part in this task, the reorganization of traction in Maurienne led them on other missions. BB 8500 being limited for a few years to courses of 150 km (because of their bad suspension and for the comfort of the drivers), it has been decided to re-use 20 for Maurienne of them, with renumerotation in BB 8700.

The transformation consisted in particular of the modification and the enlarging of the driving cabins at an end. Indeed, the BB 8700 being coupled by two in permamence, the not modified cabins remain side coupling.

Service

These machines assigned to the activity Fret and attached to the deposit of Chambéry are useful exclusively on the Ligne of Maurienne, for the growths in tail of convoys of freight. They circulate exclusively in UM (multiple units).

beginning 2006, their natural end of a career related to the reorganization of the Freight SNCF the growth quickly towards radiation.
