BB 8100

BB 8100 are locomotive electric mixed of the SNCF conceived following the electrification of the line Paris-Lyon.

Description

Rising from prototype BB 8001 and the family of BB 300 (of BB Midi in general), these engines with D.C. current were conceived in an objective of versatility. Contemporary of the last steam engines, which they replace with the wire of the electrifications, the BB 8100 are visible on the majority of the lines electrified in 1500V continuous.

The robustness of these machines was worth with a few units to be selected to be transformed into shunter BB 80000.

Service

Of 1948 with 1960 approximately, the BB 8100 are genuine mixed machines: one sees them as much on passenger trains as of goods.

From 1960, the arrival of the BB Jacquemin (BB 9200, BB 9300) faster cause the reorganization of the BB 8100 and their assignment with the goods trains. Thanks to their possibility of walk in multiple units the BB 8100 are seen entrusting the heavy trains circulating in valley of the Rhone. The first radiations of the series take place in 1988, whereas certain units are seen transforming into BB 80000 in order to carry out a service of operations.

The last units were erased in 2003, except for 6 units preserved by the activity will infra, of which three are equipped with pantograph S scrapers of white frost and 3 parked in reserve.
