BASF

BASF (,) is a chemical group German and the greatest group of chemistry in the world. Its Head office is located at Ludwigshafen in Germany.

Group BASF includes/understands more than 160 subsidiary and Joint venture S and operates on more than 150 production sites, as well in Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Africa. BASF has customers in more than 200 countries and provides its products for a large variety of industry.

In 2006, the group employed more than 95 ' 000 people (of which more than 47 ' 000 in Germany) and its sales turnover rose to 52.6 billion € for a benefit 6.7 billion €. The group currently extends its international activities with a particular sight on the Asia. Between 1990 and 2005, BASF has invests 5.6 billion € in Asia, in particular in the acquisition of the sites of Nanjing and Shanghai.

History

The Badische Anilin und Soda-Fabriken were founded with Ludwigshafen in 1865. They produced at the origin of the dye S derived from the Goudron. The first process of production was based on the recovery of under products coming from the gaseification of gas coal for domestic use. It is starting from this recovery that could be produced coloring the " aniline".

It quickly became one of the more large companies of European chemical industry. Its manpower passed from: 7000 people in 1900 with: 24000 in 1920. Thus increasing the population of Ludwigshafen of: 5000 with: 60000, then with: 100000 inhabitants.

In 1925, the group is attached to IG Farben ( InteressenGemeinschaft Farbenindustrie ), to form a Consortium. This Cartel became one of the showpieces of the saving in German war. It will be dismantled by the Alliés after the Second world war, and will be recreated in 1952. The current society is become again one of the first world chemical groups.

This company is known to have been the first to synthesize to them dyes Alizarine, Indigo and Indanthrène. It moreover succeeded in creating synthetic rubber, and succeeded in obtaining, starting from nitrogen and of coal, of the Ammoniac. BASF manufactures also Engrais and medicinal products.

Today, the activities of the group are very varied: products for agricultures, dyes, plastics, medicinal products, biotechnology, basic petrochemistry, manures, paintings, gases and oil, produced for construction (insulation,…) etc

Its factory of Ludwigshafen covers 1000 hectares and the group counts more 95  000 employees throughout the world (with the December 31st 2006) (distributed as follows: 61  400 in Europe (33  220 in Ludwigshafen), 15  500 in North America, 12800 in the Asia-Pacific and 5  500 in the rest of the world).
