Bēl (transcribed in Greek: Βελος, in Latin: Belus) is a Mot Akkadien meaning " maître" or " seigneur". It is more one title which an authentic name, taken again to quote many Babylonian divinities and Assyrie

The female one of Bēl is Bēlit, meaning Dame , Maîtresse , Reine . Linguistically Bēl is an Eastern form of the form Baal, which reiterates the essence of its direction.

Bēl gradually became the personal capacity of the Babylonian god Mardouk. In the same way, Bēlit returns to the woman of Mardouk, Sarpanit. Certain female characters, such as the mother of Mardouk, called Ninhursag, Ningal or Ninmah, were usually called Bēlit-ili ( Dame of the Gods ) in Akkadien.

The Greeks took again a time this particle, calling then their principal god Zeus Belos (Ζευς Βελος).
