Bāguà

Bāguà (Sinogramme: 八 卦, Hànyǔ pīnyīn: bāguà, Lagging-Gilles: Pa1kua4) is a term Chinese meaning “eight (Bā) figures of Divination (guà)”. Ringed is a diagram octagonal with a different Trigramme on each side.

It is a fundamental philosophical concept of the old China used in the Taoïsme and the Yi Jing , but also in other fields of the Chinese Culture such as the Fengshui, the Martial arts, or the Navigation.

Origin

There are two possible origins of the ringed :
  • the first would be the traditional philosophy of the Yin-Yang.
The relations between these two philosophies were described by Fuxi in these terms:

  • Another source possible would be the King Wen of the Dynastie Zhou: " When the world started, there were the Sky and the Earth. Together, they gave rise to all that exists on ground. The Sky is Qian - gua, and the Earth is Kun - gua. The six others gua are their enfants".

One can also see a parallel with Genèse where God separates the light from darkness, the sky of the ground, the ground and water, etc Gi-ming Shien of the American Academy off Asian Studies of San Francicso thinks that the Logos (grc λόγος) of the former Greeks was similar to CAD off Lao Zi. Pangu, Yu Huang or Nuwa is also compared with Plato.

The enigma of the eight trigrams

There exist two orders of presentation of the eight trigrams, that of Fuxi, called “succession of the former sky”, and that of the King Wen, called “succession of the posterior sky”.

The order of Fo-Hi is the following (North is in bottom):

  • Nord=Terre, Nord-Est=Foudre, Est=Feu, Sud-Est=Lac, Sud=Ciel, Sud-Ouest=Vent, Ouest=Eau and Nord-Ouest=Montagne.

The order of king Wen is the following (North is in bottom):

  • Nord=Eau, Nord-Est=Montagne, Est=Foudre, Sud-Est=Vent, Sud=Feu, Sud-Ouest=Terre, Ouest=Lac and Nord-Ouest=Ciel.

The solution which allows the passage of an order another is called key of Min Tou Men Fou , of the name of a Chinese scholar taken refuge with the Tibet after the Cultural revolution. This solution is known in the shape of the following concise text:

the king goes to the North-West

the queen goes to south-west
the new south goes to the North-East
new north goes to south-east
the axes of the final cross exchange their positions

The terms “former” and “posterior” are referred in fact in two different geometrical states, one (former) in front of necessarily preceding the other (posterior).

What gives us, on the basis of the order of Fo-Hi:

  • the Sky goes to the North-West
  • the Earth goes to south-west
  • the Mountain goes to the North-East
  • the Wind goes to south-east
  • the Lake and the Lightning exchange against Fire and Water.

The geometrical motivation on which this double permutation is based remains to be elucidated.

  • With Taiwan, in oral Mandarin, ringed , symbol of the changes, indicates also pewters (that these changes give birth to); ex: bāgùa xīnwén (八卦新聞), “press people” or “tabloid press”.
