Börte

Börte (“Céruléenne”) is the principal wife of Gengis Khan and the mother of its four sons Djötchi, Djaghataï, Ögödei and Tolui.

Börte Ujin is the girl of Dei Sechen, chief of the tribe of the Khongirats. His/her mother names Tchotan. She has three brothers, Anchen, Huohu and Che. At nine years, she is promised by her father with Temüdjin (the future Gengis Khan), oldest son of the chief Yesügei, and his first Hoëlun wife. The father of Temüjin is poisoned by the Tatars, an enemy tribe, whereas it returned at his place after having promised in marriage his son. Temüdjin being too young, it is another clan which seizes the capacity, and gives up the widows and the children of the late one. Temüdjin and its family live several years of wandering then, reconstituting gradually an inheritance.

About 1181, Temüdjin marries finally Börte. In 1182, it is removed by the Merkit, and remains their captive during eight month. Temüdjin finally succeeds in releasing it with the assistance of Toghrul, Ong Khan of Kerait, and Djamuka, chief of Djadjirat. It is then pregnant eight month, which sows doubts about the paternity of the child that it carries. Temüdjin recognizes nevertheless the son that it puts at the world a little later and who will be Djötchi, his oldest son. Thereafter, Börte will give three others wire and five girls to the conqueror. Its sons were the only heirs official to Temüdjin and it remained all its life the principal wife.

When Temüdjin succeeds, after a series of wars and alliances moving, to be made name in 1206, by the qüriltaï (assembled plenary), Tchingis Qaghan which means in turco-Mongolian: “Sovereign Oceanic”, or rather “universal sovereign”, it receives the title of Large Empress. When her husband was in shift, it assisted her beautiful Temüge brother who controlled Mongolia. She dies before Gengis Khan.
