Béthel

Béthel (in Hebrew: בֵּית־אֵל) is a locality of the highlands of the Pays of Canaan (archaeological excavations). This place would be with 10km in the north of Jerusalem, in the historical area of old the Samarie (northern of the current the West Bank). It is identified by certain at the Arab village of " Beitin" and with the Jewish establishment of " Beit El" by others.

Béthel is related in the Bible to the passage of the patriarchs Abraham and Jacob on this place. Abraham built there a furnace bridge, while Jacob fell asleep there and made there, according to the biblical account, a dream of a scale which rose to the sky and which Ange S assembled and went down.

The Ark of the Covenant resided at it later at the time of the Judges d' Israël and Samuel held his court of justice to with it.

It was one of the principal sanctuaries of the Jews of the Royaume of Israel, or kingdom of Samarie, which caused the sharp critic of the Pentateuque, in favor of a centralization of the worship to the Temple of Jerusalem.
