Bénilde saint

Saint Bénilde was born Pierre Romançon with Thuret the June 14th 1805 and he died the August 13rd 1862.

Life

Third child of a family of six, farmers in the Puy-de-Dôme, it made his studies at the Frères of the Christian Schools of Riom which it wished to integrate then. He very early lost two of his sisters, his mother, and a brother.

Admitted with the noviciate of Clermont-Ferrand in February 1820, it pronounced its wishes in June of the same year, under the name of Frère Bénilde.

He was in turn teacher with Aurillac, Moulins, Limoges, Billom and Clermont-Ferrand between 1821 and 1841.

It is in 1841 that it was named principal of Saugues, where it remained until his death.

In the church of Saugues, a furnace bridge, with hunting and lying, was devoted to him.

Work

Its life was difficult, it had to deal with many material difficulties, oppositions sharp with the notable buildings, it dealt of the class, catechism, the visits to the patients, all things which it lived faithful to its vocation.

Its major abnegation and its rigorous observance of the rule of its institute, transfigured by its affection for the children, were the mark of its holiness.

Its tomb quickly became a place of pilgrimage. At the time of the ceremony of beatification, the Pope Pie XII said of him:

It made the common things in a noncommon way

Beatification - canonization

  • Frère Bénilde was béatifié in 1948 by the Pope Pie XII

  • and was canonized on October 29th 1967 by the Pope Paul VI.
  • Its festival was fixed the August 12th .
