Bénézit

The Dictionnaire Bénézit is a dictionary of reference of the painters, Sculpteur S Dessinateur S and engraver S of the whole world. It comprises 13.440 pages for 175.000 names. Of French origin, it was translated into English.

History of the Bénézit dictionary

The first writer was Emmanuel Bénézit (1854-1920) which seems to be much inspired of the artistic dictionary German Thieme and Becker. One of the collaborators of Emmanuel Bénézit was Edmond-Henri Zeiger-Viallet ((1895-1994).

Bénézit counted several editions (source: last page of the fourth edition):

  • the first edition (1911-1923) account three volumes.
  • the second (1948-1955), eight volumes.
  • the third (1976), ten volumes.
  • most recent (1999) account 14 volumes.

Uses of Bénézit

One of the interests of Bénézit is the compact shape of the notes, which allows an exhibitor works of art to present texts of references on the artists that it exposes.

Errors announced in Bénézit

  • the French painter Auger Lucas (1685-1765) (first name Auger Lucas patronym) is at the same time with the name Lucas and the name Auger.
