Bémont

Bémont is a common Suisse of the Canton of the Jura.

Geography

The commune of the Bémont , located at 28 km as the crow flies in the North-East of La Chaux-de-Fonds and at 29 km of Delémont, belonged to the parish of Saignelégier, the close locality. In addition to the village of Bémont, it counts several hamlets (the Bump, Communances, Cufattes, Under-the-Bémont, Red-Grounds).

History

The village is mentioned for the first time in 1330 ( Belmont ).

Population: 582 hab. in 1818,612 in 1850,718 in 1870,637 in 1900,361 in 1950,346 in 2000.

Curiosities and tourism

Since the road leading of Bémont to the Red-Grounds, one reaches the natural reserve of the Étang of Royes, created in 1969. The old sawmill of Royes was located on territory of the commune of Bémont, whereas the pond belongs to the commune of Saignelégier.

Set up in 1719 and rebuilt in 1897, the vault of the Bump is dedicated to Jeanne Froidevaux (1596-1625), Marie-Hyacinthe sister.

Demonstrations

Contrary to that of Muriaux, the commune of Bémont does not have a village f4ete.

Bémont is a primarily agricultural commune.
