Bédarrides
Bédarrides is a common French, located in the department of Vaucluse and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.
Denominations
The official name of the commune, defined by the geographical official Code of INSEE, is Bédarrides . However, it is also use, of a name (without official character) Bédarrides-in-Provence , that one finds besides translated in a name Provençal E Bedarrido-in-Prouvenço .
Geography
The town of Bédarrides is located at a dozen kilometers of Avignon, Carpentras and Orange, with the east of the main road 7 and highway A7 (E714), in the north of Sorgues. One reaches it by the “road of Entraigues”.
Hydrography
The territory of Bédarrides is sprinkled by the seven following rivers: Ouvèze, the Pail, Sorgue of Entraigues, Sorgue de Velleron,, Vallat-Miant, Réal and Auzon. This commune is thus called the “city with the rivers” or “the city with the seven rivers”.
The channel of Pierrelatte also passes on the commune.
Twinnings
Bédarrides is twinned at the German city of Grasellenbach.
History
The first inhabitants would be the Voconces and the Cavares.
Origin of the name : Bédarrides would owe its name with the Latin name Bitturritae, two towers built close to the great place of the village after the victory of the Romans over Allobroges (battles of Vindalium, 120 before J.C.). They became then a named villa Villa Bittorita.
912, the Bittorita villa is given to the Remi bishop by the Louis emperor the Blind man. As from this date it was under the aegis of the archbishops of Avignon.
In 1210, the bishop from Avignon (to which it place belonged) granted a charter to the local middle-class so that it can itself work out the communal payments. The town of Bédarrides was born.
1560 - 1589, the wars of Italy and the wars of religion touch the Comtat Venaissin.
August 21st 1616, the commune is touched by strong floods.
The commune is touched by the various epidemics of plague: 1639/109 victims, 1650/145 victims, 1720/308 victims (1/3 of the population).
At the 18th century, Bédarrides will be the seat of the sect of the “Illuminés Mount-Thabor”.
1709, the inhabitants of Bédarrides suffer one very hard winter.
1791, Bédarrides is attached to France at the same time as the remainder of the Comtat Venaissin at the time of the general states. The treaty is then signed in the church even of the village.
December 4th 1851 insurrection of the republicans who, because of prince Louis-Napoleon which want to impose his capacity, seized the town hall and settle there. Repression was wild.
On October 26th and 27th 1886, the commune is once more touched by strong floods. Ouvèze and Sorgues, the two principal rivers of the city will be into raw also in 1992. On the place of the town hall and church, a plate recalls that water reached two meters, that is to say the first stage of the dwellings.

Places and monuments
One counts in Bédarrides three historical listed monuments:
the “Roman” bridge
The bridge at the origin of that Ci was indeed Roman, but it was carried by important raw in 1620. A bridge out of wooden was then established but that Ci also was carried by a new rising in August 1622 which carried an arch, making it unusable. A trail ferry was installed but as it was insufficient, the stone bridge of origin was rebuilt. Work lasted seven years (1640-1647). Today it is still used for the passage of Ouvèze in the car.
the church
This church was set up on the site of an old Romance, existing church since strong a long time and falling in ruin. Work started in 1677 and continued until 1684. It was inaugurated the day before Christmas. It was prone since to many modifications. To start, the bell-tower was finished only in 1689. Then, in 1714, the church was paved. In 1719 a balustrade was built there like two stoups in 1725. Inside a total of eight vaults were made.
the water tower
This water tower which is used today as round not was a cemetery before. It was moved to conform to the law according to which the cemeteries must be built apart from the enclosure of the city.
