Azure and Asmar

Azure and Asmar is a Feature-length film of animation French of Michel Ocelot, realizer in particular of the film Kirikou .

For the first time in its career, Ocelot carries out a film in Synthesized images. It is the occasion for him to tackle the subject of the tolerance and the difference of the other.

Synopsis

This Cartoon film is centered, within the framework of the Europe and the the medieval Maghreb , on the relationship between a fair little boy with the blue eyes and a brown little boy with the black eyes.

In a decoration evoking medieval Europe, a nurse come on other side of the sea raises her Asmar son, brown with the black eyes, and the son of her Master, Azur, fair little boy with the blue eyes. Arrived at the age where they jalousent the maternal love, Azur is sent by his/her father downtown to live with a tutor. The father drives out then the nurse and his son.

A few years later, Azur decides to leave in the country on other side the sea to find and marry the Fée djinns, heroin of the tales which its nurse sang to him. A vagueness makes it fall over edge and it fails on a beach of an unknown country, of which it recognizes only hardly the language of its nurse and flees of the inhabitants who fear the curse of the blue eyes. He wanders while being made pass for blind man, guided by another Crapoux white, by seeking the three keys necessary to reach the fairy of the djinns.

Downtown, it finds its nurse, become Jenane, the widow of a commercial rich person. In spite of the rancour of Asmar to be driven out by the father of Azure, Jenane decides to equitably support its two sons in their search of the fairy.

Financing

To carry out and leave Azure and Asmar , the production company North-western Production of the producers Christophe Rossignon and Philip Boëffard gathered ten million euros, of which a million euros in the form of tax credit granted by the Ministry for Finances French because the film was carried out in France.

This sum, more important than for a feature film with real actors, explains the big number of financial present in the generic of beginning: two television channels (France 3 and Canal+), the areas Ile-de-France and the Rhone-Alps, the distributer in rooms and dvd Diaphana, and of the coproducers and institutions European.

These contributions are supplemented by the préventes for the exploitation of film in 35 countries signed after the preview with the Cannes festival 2006 where the film is presented during About fifteen the realizers. To Japan, the film is thus distributed by the Studio Ghibli.

Anecdotes

The film has evil to find a distributer in the United States because of the scene of the Allaitement of the two babies by Jenane at the beginning of the film, which is regarded by the US distributers as immontrable in the USA. In Germany, one proposed in Michel Ocelot to double all the German dialogs whereas an important work was made in classical Arabic language in the original version. Michel Ocelot preferred to rather lose a large German distributer for more modest than to mutilate his work.
