Azumanga daioh
Azumanga Daioh (あずまんが大王, Azumanga daiō ) is a comic Manga of Kiyohiko Azuma adapted in Anime in 2002. The manga, assembly of several Yonkoma (manga of four boxes, is equivalent of the Comic strip) account 4 volumes, published at MediaWorks in Japan and the editions Kurokawa for France.
The action
The action is mainly in a college of Tōkyō. The main characters are young girls, pupils of this college, and two their professors. Thus, the reader can discover the obsession of Sakaki for the cats, the efforts of Chiyo to be integrated in this group of girls older than it, the irritations of Yomi towards his " better ennemie" or night dreams like diurnal of Ōsaka in connection with the feather beds of Chiyo or the father of this one, just like their voyages between friends.
Origin of the title
The title Azumanga Daioh does not have true significance, it acts of a Mot-valise composed of the name of the author, " Azuma" , and of the word " Manga ". The first or almost mangas published of the author, of the parodic strips indeed, were called " Azumanga" (manga of Azuma), title which remained with the edition in volume. When Azuma published its new series, he thus simply added to the old title the " Daioh" , which as for him comes from the magazine in which the series was prépubliée, Dengeki Daioh. The " term; Azumanga" is generally used by the manager of Azuma, Hideki Satomi, to indicate its achievements.
Characters
Main characters
Chiyo Mihama () alias Young Chiyo-chan- and very Kawaii exceptionally gifted 10 years, very quickly integrated like mascot of the group. It is found in the same college as her comrades after having jumped five classes, and remains in spite of the difference in age always the most endowed with the class. The only thing which it has of the evil to control would be apparently the Virelangue S. In spite of its apparent mentality of adult, his personality remains that of a girl of its age. Girl of an easy family, it lives in an immense residence and has a house of holidays in seaside, from which it makes profit her friends. In the imaginary one of Ōsaka, the feather beds which it carries permanently are used him to fly.
- " Légèrement" lethargic, head-in-the air, slow to react, that of which it is conscious but that it does not want to assume, Ōsaka is a pupil who “was not easy choper” (dixit Yukari). It shows however provisions amazing on certain points leaving ordinary, as the resolution of humorous riddles (what is characteristic of its area of origin). She speaks the Kansai-Ben (dialect of Ōsaka) and not Japanese standard.
- Friendly of childhood in spite of it of Tomo, accumulating in vain the modes (if the dialogs indeed let to us believe that it is in overweight, the drawing their contradictory), very studious residence however. It gives the impression to be the " voice of the raison" sometimes group, but likes to show a direction of rather black humor (see the episode of the hoquet of Ōsaka). It is especially pointed out for its facility with the irritation.
- Boosted, dynamic, Tomo is always enthusiastic, in particular extremely trustful in itself (until launching weak challenges that it always loses because of its bad performances in all the fields) and voluntarily teases even provocative if that can animate the life of the troop, and to aggravate Yomi. It is also illustrated in the mediocrity of its school results, which concerns almost a sharp-edged couldn't-give-a-damn attitude, which has equal only its fascination (and its jealousy) for the chest of Sakaki.
- big girl athletic exasperating some of her comrades by his morphology, it is rather timid what makes wrongly accept his/her classmates who it is distant, impression maintained by its face " angulaire" (Kaorin: “You, you must play plays of the kind… Plays of combat or race, not? ”). She adores cuddly toys and, more generally, all that is Kawaii . She has in particular a great passion for the cats which is unfortunately not reciprocal (in particular when she deals with the " cat which mord" or kami-neko ).
- Joining heroins of the history more tardily, at the beginning of the second year, under the will of Yukari- Sensei to gain the annual Festival of the Sports , it acts of an extremely athletic pupil who devotes his life to the sport, to the detriment of its studies. Although maintaining very good relationships with her comrades, it enjoys to consider Sakaki as a sporting rival (athletic in spite of it) - what does not prevent them from becoming friendly with whole share. Just like Tomo or Ōsaka, it belongs to the " Club of the tâches" , within sight of their poor school results.
Professors
Yukari Tanizaki () alias Yukari-sensei- Main teacher of the class of the troop (class 3), teaching English, it often behaves like a child. Its methods are not very conventional and it maintains a certain proximity, alternating scenes of confidences and provocation, with its pupils, who wonder sometimes if it is really teaching. Its mood is very changing. It can neither drink, nor to drive a car and its preferred leisure remains the inactivity.
- Professor of sport, professor principal of the class 5 then 2 and friend of Yukari, even if this one has fun to cause it permanently, Nyamo keeps (most of the time) its calm and its character sympathetic nerve, which strongly distinguishes it from his/her colleague. She is very appreciated of her pupils. Yukari and Minamo are friendly since the college and a discussion with the headmaster reveals that they are in station with the college which they themselves attended, which was formerly a college for girls.
- traditional Professor of literature, with the mouth constantly large opened and the eyes dissimulated by glasses, it seems always attracted by the student E S (reason whom it admits being that which pushed it to follow this occupation!), in particular for Kaorin. All the occasions are good for him to be able " to observe more in detail them anatomie" , of which " Festivals of the sport" for which he says to prefer that “the girls return their tee-shirts in their shorts”. It is despite everything groom with an attentive beautiful woman and is father of one little girl to the waked up air. It will finally prove to be a person in the large heart, not hesitating, just like his wife, to invest themselves in the charitable causes and to help the others.
One also finds a last professor, ever named, with the clear hair, intervening only in some discussions with Yukari.
Supporting characters
Kaori alias Kaorin (かおりん) is an young girl of reserved enough appearance which seems to have an unavowed attraction for Sakaki. It tries all that is possible for him to accumulate the hours spent near it, with the risk to be irritated when the reputation of the latter is called in question, in particular when it is it by her friend Chihiro (千尋). Kaolin also testifies to a certain artistic talent. One does not know large thing moreover about it.Chiyo-fuss (ちよ父) is a fantastic creature with the strange physique that Sakaki and Ōsaka compare to the father of Chiyo in their dreams.
Michiru (alias Miruchi ) and Yuka is two friends of childhood of Chiyo, always at the elementary school, and who resemble under certain aspects Yukari and Minamo.
Masaaki Ōyama () is a pupil boy (only named history) who was designated of class representative office of first half of the year, with the whole beginning of the history, having " a mug of délégué" (dixit Yukari) and, thing which one will learn a little later, of good performances in English. He is posed as a disciple of Kimura.
Kamineko (かみねこ) alias the cat which bites is the gray cat that Sakaki often meets on the way of the school. This one takes obviously pleasure to bite its hand which it tends irresistibly to try to cherish it, which it will never manage to make. It will go even until taking unhappy airs for finally being able to obtain its daily pleasure at the expense of Sakaki.
Tadakichi-san (忠吉さん) is the white dog of Chiyo, a Chien of mountain of the Pyrenees (for requirements of translation, it became a Berger of the Abruzzi in the French version). He is very large and nice. It is also a good friend of Sakaki.
Mayā (マヤー) is the wildcat of Iriomote that Sakaki will adopt at the end of the history. Met on the island of the same name at the time of a school voyage, this one will appear the only cat which will let itself touch by the pupil. He will go even until going to find it when his/her mother dies. He holds his name of Yamamaya , word local indicating this race of cats.
Nekokoneko (ねここねこ) is a model of cuddly toy apparently very famous, representing as its name suggests it a surmounted white cat of its kitten. It is about the fetish object of Sakaki.
Animates
A version Web (single episode) first of all was born at the end of 2000, in paying diffusion on Internet. The initiative was a failure, because of restricted means of payment and of the scarcity at the time of connections at high-speed, and this episode thus did not have any continuation. It was followed into 2001 of very short a 5 minute old film, with a casting completely different voices and a team, intended for the promotion of the future version TV.The Anime version TV saw its diffusion beginning with the Japan on April 8th, 2002 and remained on the screens until September 30th, 2002, initially on chain AT-X of the SkyPerfect satellite, then on the hertzian chain TV Tōkyō. In the satellite version, each day of the week, the televiewers could discover small a 5 minutes episode which was used as interlude between other emissions. Finally a hertzian diffusion took over by compiling the 5 episodes of the week on satellite in a traditional episode of duration diffused next Monday.
Thus, 130 5 minutes episodes (that is to say 26 25 minutes episodes) were produced. The totality of these stories is published in France in the shape of 2 boxes of 3 DVD to the editions Kaze.
