Azotobacter

Azotobacter is one of Bactérie pertaining to the class of the Gammaproteobacteria. The cells are ovoid and relatively broad (2 with 4µm, until 6 µm). These bacteria are aerobic strict, Hétérotrophe S and have the capacity to fix the atmospheric Azote. In the absence of food, the cell can be surrounded by a thick envelope resistant to the dryness: cyste or cyst.

The Azotobacter can be isolated from the ground and water. In the ground, these bacteria are present in significant amount to the level of the Rhizosphère, near the roots of the plants.

The comprehension of the mechanism of fixing of nitrogen by these bacteria is of an interest for the Agriculture because Azotobacter takes part in the fertilization of the ground.
