Azay-le-Ferron is a common French, located in the department of the Indre and the area Center.

Geography

  • Azay-Le-Ferron is a commune which is located in the Regional natural park of Brenne, with the borders of the Berry and the Touraine and which count today 1010 inhabitants, Ferronais and Ferronnaises. The etymology of this name refers, on the one hand, with the many tool bags from where one extracted the iron ore until the 19th century, and " Azay" , in addition, would be a deformation of the word " aqua" (water).

  • the Castle of Azay-le-Ferron remarkably preserved, shelters splendid collections of furniture Renaissance, 16th century and Empire. Beautiful gardens surround it: garden with the Frenchwoman, garden landscape, garden the topiary ones and boxwood cut, with the strange forms. This castle where the family lived Hersent Luzarche was bequeathed in 1951 to the town of Tours (prefecture of the Indre-et-Loire) which is owner today.
  • the Church Saint-Nazaire was classified Historic building in 1927 and was placed under the patronage of the Saint-Cyran Abbey in Brenne. One has no document concerning with his construction but the nave was dated from the beginning of the 13th century.

  • the forest of Turns-Preuilly , at the exit of Azay-Le-Ferron, is attended as of 1st front century JC by the Gallic ones which exploit iron. End of the Rebirth in the middle of the 19th century, the exploitation of the forest is related to the activities of fournaux of Claise. The forest is used with the extraction of the iron ore, the charcoal producion and the slag deposits resulting from the transformation of the ore. At the end of the 18th century, a tilery is in activity with the locality " the Bourbon" Fountain;. At the time of the Revolution of 1789, the forest is sold with the castle of Azay-Le-Ferron. In 1951-1952, the family bequeaths the unit to the town of Turns. The national office of Forests (ONF) ensures it today management for town of Turns.

  • the animalist Parc of High-Touches , property of the national Muséum of natural history, is more animalist big space of France. It is located at 4 km of Azay, in a large forest of 500 ha. It brings a new design of the zoological gardens by leaving the animals in semi-freedom, in roomy enclosures. The visitors can observe more than 1000 animals of the 5 continents, of which a single collection of deer tribe and rare species.

  • the permanent Center of initiatives for the environment (CPIE) is an association created in 1979 in order to promote ecology and the local inheritance on a territory scale. The CPIE proposes in this direction of the educational, ludic and scientific actions, adapted to all the public ones: classes discovered for the school ones, animations nature (search for traces of animals, strolls natural, observations of birds…) and scientific and artistic training courses (Cistude S, insects, mushrooms, sketch naturalist, painting…). The CPIE also acts as lodging.
