Azawak
The Azawak is a bovine race of the Niger.
Origin
It is resulting from zebus introduced in Africa of the east towards 1800 before JC. They gradually conquered Saharan Africa sub with the favor of the draining of the climate. Their best adaptation to this climate than the European bovines supported them.It comes from the Niger, of the area almost éponyme: Azawagh where it is a race traditionally raised by the Peuls which represented 2,6 million heads in 1985.
Morphology
It wears a dress often black and white red or black, but so fawn-coloured magpie mouchetée of white.C' is a race of intermediate size, 110-130 cm for 300 kg in the cow.
Aptitudes
It is a mixed race. It gives 500-600 liters by lactation on 250-270 days in traditional extensive system. In station with a more abundant food, the production reaches 800-1100 liters out of 270-300 days. The carcasses have a good output. (superior with 50%)C' is a race adapted very well to the arid semi medium of the the Sahel.
