Azali Assoumani

Azali Assoumani (January 1st 1959, Mitsoudjé -) is a politician become president of the Islamic Federal republic of the Comoros since a coup d'etat the April 30th 1999.

Colonel Assoumani seizes the power after having reversed the president by interim Tadjidine Ben Said Massounde. The soldiers explain their intervention in the political life for reasons of Territorial integrity since president Massounde negotiated with the representatives of the island of Anjouan, one of the three islands which forms the Union of the Comoros, a larger autonomy, even independence. Actually, a last conference with Tananarive had made it possible to draw a consensus between the three islands, even if Anjouan were long in ratifying these agreements. The army had refused besides to intervene to put an end to confrontations between large Comorians and anjouanais, then seizes these disorders to intervene. Moreover as of his accession with the capacity, colonel Azali anything else made only ratify the claims anjounaises and renonça to exert his authority on this island which profits from greatest autonomy.
