The strait of Taiwan or strait of Formosa is a strait of one hundred eighty kilometers width located between the continental China and the island of Taiwan (or Formosa). It has a width of one hundred thirty kilometers in its smaller portion. This strait is regarded as part of the southernmost China Sea and to the Eastern China Sea in its North-East connects it.
In the west of the strait the province of Fujian is, in continental China. One finds there the islands of Jinmen, Xiamen, Hainan and Matsu; the two first are asserted militarily by the Popular republic of China, which does not recognize besides the sovereignty of the island of Taiwan. In the east is the west coast of Taiwan and the Pescadores. This strait is the object of an exploitation by fishermen.
The strait was the theater various military confrontations between the Popular republic of China and the République of China since the last days of the Chinese Civil war, in 1949, when the forces of the Guomindang directed not Tchang Kaï-chek beat a retreat on Taipei.
The rivers Minjiang and Jiulong are emptied in the strait.
