Aymar Joseph de Roquefeuil and of Bousquet
Aymar-Joseph de Roquefeuil and of Bousquet (born the March 19th 1714 with Brest - died in 1782, with Bourbonne-the-Baths), count de Roquefeuil, was a French sailor of the 18th century, which was used in the royal Marine during the reigns as Louis XV and Louis XVI.
Biography
Oldest son of Lieutenant Général of the Naval armies Jacques Aymar de Roquefeuil and of Bousquet and Jeanne-Louise of the Hand and going down from the House of Roquefeuil-Blanquefort, one of the most famous families of Languedoc, Aymar Joseph de Roquefeuil becomes midshipman in Brest at 13 years (1727). Teach (1731), it sails of the Baltique to Saint Domingue and will be named Lieutenant in 1741. It is made Captain and knight about Saint Louis on January 1st, 1746, with less than 32 years, for its services noticed during 19 years.
It will order " Aquilon" for fifteen months in the Antilles in 1750 and 1751. Having under its orders the frigate of Mr Duchaffault and accompanied by an English frigate, it fulfills with skill a delicate mission on which the Rouillé minister congratulated it several times.
That enabled him to take an active part with Mister de Morogues, ordering the place of Brest, with the foundation in this port, since 1752, of an academy of Navy of which it was one of the first members (with his/her younger brother), but who was decimated by the losses of the war between 1756 and 1763.
Between 1754 and 1758, Roquefeuil fulfills the functions of second chief of squadron, in the Antilles, under Sirs of Galissonnière, of Périer and Bompart.
Promoted with the rank of chief of squadron of the Naval armies, on January 1st, 1761, with less than 47 years, it accepted the command of the Navy and the wearing of Brest to which the King will link, on March 25th, 1762, that of the city and the castle of Brest and the island of Ushant that his/her father had already had.
In a report of presentation, the minister written to the King who approves his hand:
" It has been useful since nearly 40 years in the Navy, it made 16 campaigns, had 4 commands with the sea and has for 5 years the command of the Wearing of Brest to the satisfaction of S.M. ". It is then named Lieutenant Général of the Naval armies, on August 3rd, 1766, at 52 years, preserving its commands at Brest, which will enable him there to promote with the minister, the Duke of Praslin, the news " royal Academy of navy " , under the immediate patronage of the King, in April 1769. He was the first director.
Promoted vice-admiral the April 6th 1781, Large Cross of the royal and military Order of Saint-Louis, it is regarded as one of the principal organizers of the naval policy of Louis XV and Louis XVI, which made it possible France to overcome England, during the Guerre of American Independence.
