Avunculat

The term avunculat is a technical term used, in Anthropologie of the relationship, to indicate the relation between a person of reference (Ego) and her “maternal uncle” or, conversely, between Ego and its uterine nephew or Ego and its uterine niece. The term avunculat drift itself of the Latin avunculus , a term of relationship used to indicate, in this language, the brother of the mother (MB) in opposition to the brother of the father patruus (FF). In certain companies with filiation matrilinéaire marked, the role which is submitted with the father in other companies, can be assumed by the maternal uncle who becomes the “social father” of the children of his sister. The concept of avunculat however is not reserved for designation of this formula of descent (moreover rather rare) and it can also describe a formula of matrimonial alliance. The marriage of a man with the girl of his sister is thus called marriage avunculaire. If the avunculat term applies to the bonds which link the brother of the mother and the son or the girl of the sister it however also can, in a looser way, to get busy to indicate the relation between a paternal uncle and a child of his brother.
