Avernes

Avernes is a common French, located in the department of the Val-d'Oise and the area Île-de-France. Its inhabitants is called Avernois (be).

Geography

Avernes is located in the Vexin French and built on banks of the Aubette of Meulan, which curves through the village.

History

At the 9th century, the marshes of Avernes make of it a shelter for the inhabitants of the close cities, besieged by the Norman ones. The vernes / alders are climbing plants which constituted the essence of the vegetation of the marshes of Avernes.
In 1563, Catherine de Médicis authorizes the construction of Protestant temples with Avernes and Limay. Avernes will be thus, until the revocation of the Édit of Nantes, an important place of Protestant worship, where Calvin would have come prêcher.
