History

The idea to create an avenue at this place was born from the desire of the elite of the coffee of the end of the 19th century to have a residence near the central districts of the time, like the Praça da República , the district of Higienópolis or even the Campos Elísios .

It was inaugurated on December 18th 1891 on the initiative of engineer Joaquim Eugênio of Lima. It was at the origin to name avenida das Acácias or Prado de São Paulo but Lima declared:

“It will be named which occurred Paulista, in homage to Paulistas” (inhabitants of São Paulo)

At the end of the Years 1920, it was renamed which occurred Carlos de Campos , in homage to the former president of the state but the inhabitants preferred to return his name of origin to him.

Bordered originally by the manors of the local middle-class, the avenue knew a deep metamorphosis in second half of the 20th century with the massive construction of buildings and skyscraper. Some rare old constructions were preserved and classified, avoiding little their disappearance complete.
