Aventicum

Aventicum is an archeological site, vestige of an important establishment Roman, now common of Avenches (Suisse).

Aventicum was the Roman city which was used as capital with the Helvètes thanks to its strategic site on the highway network as with its access to the waterway by a channel which connected the suburbs to the port on the Lac of Morat. It had more than 20 ' 000 inhabitants. (reconstitution of the city)

History

  • In 58 av. J. - C., after their attempt at exodus and their defeat by the army of Jules César, close to Bibracte, the four tribes helvètes turned over on the Swiss plate.
  • In 15 av. J. - C, annexation by the Romans of all the territories which constitute current Switzerland, Aventicum became the capital of Helvètes.

  • Towards 71/72 a. J. - C., Under the emperor Vespasien, the city was high with the row of colony.
  • IIe and IIIe S. a. J. - C. Apogee of the city.
  • Towards 275/277, the Alamans invaders reduced considerably the standard of living of the city, which in spite of a certain continuity, did not manage to be entirely restored. The vestiges and testimonys of Late Antiquity are still rare.
  • In these areas, the Roman epoch takes officially fine in 455 a. J. - C.
