Avalon Hill
Avalon Hill was a editor of Board games. This company specialized in the war games and the strategy games on plate. It published also at the time of the booklets of rules for micro war games and proposed also a popular range of sporting simulations. It is today a division of the company Wizards off the Coast, itself become a division of the company Hasbro.
History
The company was born in 1958 when Charles S. Roberts exploited the success of its war game Tactics. With Tactics Roberts created a type of play of plate based on simulations and strategy games. This kind of plays existed already (H.G. Wells had written a booklet of rules called Little Wars), but these plays exclusively used miniature figurines and a ground in 3D (like railway model making).Avalon Hill was pionnière while inventing for the war games on plate of the concepts such as cutting of the charts out of hexagonal grids, the taking into account of the historical events, the control fields of certain units, the effects of the ground on the moral movement of the troops and the historical events. Such complex plays could be played during days, even of the weeks. In addition, AH developed a system making it possible to the players to play by email.
The most famous play and most popular published by AH was Panzerblitz (1970), drawn for company AH by the young person Jim Dunnigan. Dunnigan was then gone from there to found what was going to become the most important competitor of AH: Simulations Publications Inc. The other well accommodated plays published were The Battle off Midway , Afrika Korps , The Battle off the Bulge and Blitzkrieg . This last play was more than one simple play of drive representing two camps, red and blue and other neutral countries. Many rule-alternatives were create for Blizkrieg.
In the Seventies, AH moved away from the war games to publish plays of sport such as popular the Statis pro . These publications ceased with beginning of the year 90 when emerged on the same topic of the plays on computer. Company AH produced other plays not having anything to see either with the sport or the war, such as Point off Law , Shakespeare, TV Wa and Stocks and Bonds and of which much had been taken again by AH the 3M company in 1975.
Avalon Hill was one of the first companies of play to publish plays on computers, as from 1980. AH adapted a certain number of sets of plates on various platforms ( TRS-80 , Vic-80 , Commodore 64 , APPLE II etc) and various formats (audio cassettes and diskettes 5 ¼). These titles appeared rather popular so that AH still publishes in an occasional way of the plays for computers in the Eighties and Nineties.
Avalon Hill became a branch of Monarch Avalon Printing in 1962 (in order to discharge debts contracted by Roberts), with which it lasted during next the 36 years. Monarch decided to drop the sector from the plays, and dissolves AH at the summer 1998. Hasbro Jeux then acquired the rights of plays AH and om AH for 6 million dollars. Hasbro publishes a selected list now acians plays AH.
Hasbro also republished under name AH of the plays before not create by AH such as Axis and Allies. The plays published under the Hasbro label were conceived to have a broad audience and are directed “specialized players” than the plays published previously. The index of the plays below is separate in two categories according to whether the publication of each play took place before or after the acquisition of AH by Hasbro. Division does not reflect only the change of label but also the development of the play and the philosophy of the market research.
AH had also its own magazine. The General Magazine was published of 1964 to 1988 and proposed many headings: strategic and tactical articles, historical analyzes, article devoteds to with specific plays, questions and answers for such or such play, lists retailers and players, information on the future projects of AH etc, sporting articles or on video games AH.
