History

Auzits is a small village of Aveyron rich in history. Through the times, this village knew deep changes. The vllage is cut out in three hamlets: The Castle, the Cushy job and the Hospital. Good number of visitors come each year on the traces from an animated historical past.

At the time of the knights, lords, Auzits which was located on the road of Saint Jacques de Compostelle (active way of Conches towards Villefranchois) was a big step for all these pilgrims in search of spirituality. Indeed, not far from the current village, a small vault, named Vault of the Hospital, accommodated the people sick, tired, or dying. Under the responsibility of the Knights of the Order of Jerusalem, the vault atenante with this old people's home is nowadays still in very good state, since the municipality invested in the repair of the roof.

At this same time, a lord reigned in the hamlet of the Castle. Well before the current church is built, a strong castle dominated this green valley. This castle included/understood two turns, of the imposing buttresses and ramparts, a Pont levis, ditch S, a Crypte…

In 1358, the English invaded this short period of Aveyron and instanlés themselves there during about thirty years. One allots still nowadays, of many local expressions, names of villages, festivals to this invader come from north. In 1398, after the withdrawal of the English, the strong castle of Auzits is left with the abandonment; its inhabitants eager not to know a seigneuriale family again, collégialement decided to build on the ruins of this castle the new church of the village. Perched on this rock piton, overhanging the valley, sitting on powerful buttresses, the inhabitants transformed the keep into bell-tower, demolished to recover the stone the second tower and built the central nave of this church.

Nowadays, this baptized church church St Maurice d' Auzits is a curious building from its architecture. A crypt, directed in the east, is classified with the Historic buildings. Dating from the 11th century, this place sheltered the old vault of the castle. Forsaken a long time by its inhabitants, these places are free today access for visits. Decorated murals dating from the 14th century, this crypt is one of the jewels of Aveyron of the Middle Ages.

Inside this church, decoration, the luminosity, and the retable being next to the sacristy make this church a place or the respect carries it. The retable, composed of wood, described from its sculptures the epopee of St Maurice. At the center, a table puts in scene Jacques de Mauleon de Labastide, Chevalier about Malta, at the time of its dubbing.

Concealed unfortunately in 2001, of multiple treasures are not present any more in this crowned place. In particular, a Virgin with the child, dating from the 16th century, out of wood polychrome and gilded with the fine gold was stolen by plunderers.

During XIXe and XXe centuries, this commune made very particular great strides thanks to the industry of coal. Many families lived of this work which was devastated by successive closings of companies in the Decazevillois basin. The vestiges of this industrial surface are still visible on the road of Rulhe.

The bloody past, the economic laws changed, during the centuries, this village. Heirs to a strong past, the inhabitants today are still marked by this heritage. To include/understand and know the local history of this village are without any doubt the best means of becoming aware of construction, architecture, and mentalities between Conques and Belcastel.
