Auxochrome

A auxochrome is, in a molecule, a grouping of ionizable atoms which can change the frequency of absorption of a Chromophore. These auxochromes groups increase the electronic delocalization, thus modifying energies of absorption thus the molar coefficients of extinction and the frequencies of absorption.

One can quote as example the groupings alcohols and the groupings amines.

If the frequency of absorption is decreased, the effect is known as bathochrome. Absorption moves then towards the big wavelengths, towards the Infra-rouge.

If the frequency of absorption is increased, the effect is known as hypsochrome. Absorption moves towards the small wavelengths, towards the Ultra-violet.
