Auvours

Military camp and parade ground located in the the Sarthe, to 12 km in the West of the Mans. The 2nd regiment of marines is there in garrison since 1963.

Located not far from the plate of Auvours, important place of the battle of Mans of the 10 January 12th, 1871, the camp is created after the defeat of France and plays a big role in the formation of the recruits of the 4th military region (4th army corps) whose seat is then in Mans.

In 1908, via the car manufacturer manceau Leon Bowlful, Wilbur Wright realizes with the camp of Auvours of many tests of flight for the first time in Europe on board its Flyer III A.

During the war of 1914-1918, the camp of Auvours becomes a base camp of the allied armies: Belgian, British soldiers rest there and then American soldiers at the time involve themselves there when the Sarthe is an important zone of transit of the American army between November 1918 and July 1919.
