Auvillar

Auvillar is a common , located in the department of Tarn-et-Garonne and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.

The inhabitants of Auvillar are called the Auvillarais and Auvillaraises .

At the end of the long plain, a Suspended bridge crosses the the Garonne between Espalais and the " port " of Auvillar.

Heraldic

This blazon dates from the Middle Ages and was ordered by the lords who decided that Auvillar would be well represented by 2 towers each one surmounted of 3 flêches, schematization of a residence seigneuriale. But this blazon was not official.

Geography

The village of Auvillar is located on the the Garonne, between the towns of Agen and Montauban. It is located on a rocky outcrop dominating the Garonne. The sight extends from the doors of the Aquitaine at the coasts from the Quercy.

History

Initially known like Gallo-Roman city ( Alta Villa ), Auvillar was a Gallo-Roman oppidum fixed on a rocky outcrop. It was victim many invasions, particularly Normand S until the 11th century.

At the 12th century, the city becomes chief town of a Viscount, then property of the Counts of Armagnac with before becoming at the 16th century stronghold of the Kings of Navarre.

Auvillar is attached to the crown of France, with the advent of Henri IV in 1589. Its situation of fortified town subjects the city of Auvillar to all the conflicts which devastate the area, since the Croisade against the Albigensians, the Guerre One hundred Year old, the wars of religion, the Ligue.

, Auvillar owes its prosperity with two industries the Faïence S of which was located at the place says Lance and the preparation of the feathers of Oie used in Calligraphie, and with its river traffic.
