Autonomous province of Western Bosnia

The République of Western Bosnia was a Bosnian entity autoproclamée in Bosnia-Herzégovine during the war of independence of Bosnia-Herzégovine.

History

The September 27th 1993, the authorities of the municipality of Velika Kladuša make secession with respect to Bosnia-Herzégovine and proclaim the creation of the “autonomous Province of Western Bosnia” ( Autonomna Pokrajina Zapadna Bosna / АутономнаПокрајинаЗападнаБосна in Bosnien, Croatian Serbe or ) with for capital Velika Kladuša. Its president was Fikret Abdić “Babo”, agroalimentary plant manager Agrokomerc and candidate with the presidency of Bosnia-Herzégovine. Its policy was pro-Serb and collaborationist.

The army of Bosnia-Herzégovine then starts to face the dissenting authorities and the army (5  000 men approximately) and gains ground. The August 21st 1994, the territory is reconquered by the authorities of Bosnia-Herzégovine.

The November 9th 1994, the autonomous Province of Western Bosnia is restored after the expulsion of the troops of the Bosnian regular army in the West of Bihać, along the border with the Serb Republic of Krajina. Until its disappearance, its territory will be limited to a narrow band.

July 26th, 1995, the autonomous Province proclaims “Republic of Western Bosnia”.

At the beginning of August 1995, it serves as last line of defense for the Serbes of the Serb République of Krajina in Croatia whose capital falls to the hand from the Croatian the August 5th. The Croatian army crosses the border and with the assistance of the Bosnian army dissoud the Republic of Western Bosnia the August 7th 1995 which will be built-in until today with the Canton of Una-Sanatorium of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzégovine. Fikret Abdić as for him was currently stopped and is in detention for war crimes.

Geography

The Republic of Western Bosnia was located at the extreme North-West of the Bosnia-Herzégovine, in the the dinaric Alps and its territory corresponded about to the municipality of Velika Kladuša.

It was populated in majority by Moslem Bosnians. Its borders did not cease varying with the liking of advanced and the retirements of the Serbes troops, Croatian and Bosnian.
