Autonomous prefecture

The autonomous prefectures (自治州; Pinyin : zìzhìzhōu ) is a administrative division in Popular republic of China. They are located at the level immediately lower than the province or the autonomous region. They were conceived to gather one or more ethnic minorities. One finds them mainly in the Western areas of China.
