Automatische treinbeïnvloeding

ATB , Automatische treinbeïnvloeding in Dutch, is the control system the speed of the trains used with the Netherlands. There are several versions.

ATB-EG

ATB-EG (for ATB éérste generatie , i.e. first generation) more often called ATB simply, is the version generalized on the Dutch network. Its development started in the years 1950, and was accelerated following an accident with Harmelen on January 8th, 1962. It functions by the emission of impulses to 75 Hz at various frequencies in the ways, corresponding to " codes".

ATB-E

ATB Eenvoudig (simple ATB ) is a simplified version of the ATB-EG used for example for the historical machines.

ATB++/ATB-VV

The ATB-EG has a major defect: it does not prevent the irregular crossing of the signals to the stop ( stoptonend center ). To cure it, one currently installs to a thousand of the places considered as most dangerous one complementary system: ATB++ called ATB-VV now (for ATB Verbeterde Versie , i.e. improved version).
It functions with three beacons placed upstream of the protected signal, and limiting each time a little more speed, so as to have a careful approach of the closed signal.

ATB-NG

ATB-NG ( ATB nieuwe generatie , meaning " news génération") is a system intended to mitigate the various disadvantages of the ATB-EG:
  • it does not prevent irregular crossings of signals to the stop;
  • the stages between each code are sometimes high (particularly between 80 km/h and 130 km/h);
  • it does not allow high speeds 140 km/h.

The ATB-NG functions with beacons with the beacons TBL 2/3; the gradation authorized speeds is of tens of km/h.

On the lines equipped with ATB-EG and not with ATB-NG, equipment on board makes use of information of the ATB-EG.

ATB+

ATB+ (name technical: ATBM+ ) is an easy way employed on the section Den Haag Mariahoeve - Hoofddorp to make it possible the Thalys to roll to 160 km/h: the ATB-EG gives the code 140 km/h, and at the same time of beacons ATB-NG emit a special signal ATBM+, the combination of both authorizing the speed of 160 km/h.
