A monitor is a peripheral of exit usual of a Ordinateur. It is the screen where the information seized or required by the user is posted and generated or restored by the computer, in the form of text and of images in two dimensions with possibly an effect with three dimensions. The text and the images can be fixed or animated.

On certain systems, the screen can also be used as peripheral of entry: the user can choose an action by touching the corresponding part of the screen, if the system envisages it; one speaks then about touchscreen.

Technologies

Various technologies exist:

  • the screens with cathode tube (or CRT), it is those which have the angle of vision broadest and up to 2005 best returned colors, but they heavy, cumbersome and greedy in energy,
  • the screens with liquid crystals (or LCD), light and convenient, but equipped with are less good returned colors and, for certain models of line entry, of a sometimes awkward remanence for the very fast plays or animations (films…)
  • the plasma display screens, of made, but expensive very good and of more limited lifespan,
  • DLP (DIGITAL Light Processing) to million mirrors,
  • screens SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display), not marketed yet, were to arrive at the end of 2006/at the beginning of 2007 (pushed back for an unknown date) they use a cathodic mini-tube for each Pixel; returned is very close to screens CRT, for a thickness comparable and a priori a price similar to screens LCD.

The flat panel displays are used more and more. They post approximately: 266000 colors, extended by Tramage (dithering) to approximately 17 million.

Characteristics

The screens of portable (year 2007) are almost all brilliant so that the colors are more beautiful than the screens chechmates.
Les brilliant screens is less comfortable than the screens chechmates because of the reflections.

Since 2007 the sales of monitor from 20 inch S strongly increase, the sold screens are a little in 16/9e, much in 16/10e and very rare are the 4/3,5/4.
Avant the 2007 flat panel displays in lower part of 20 inches are numerous under the format of image 4/3.
Ce change of format makes it possible to optimize the cutting of the flagstones in order to reduce the production costs.

Dimensions

Whereas the international standard recommends the Mètre (and its subdivisions by sections of: sometimes 1000 like the Millimetre) like legal Measuring unit, one uses still the inch, to express the size of the screen (i.e. the large diagonal). A screen of 17  inches is in fact a screen of 43  cm , already traditional size for the tubes of the television sets in the Years 1950.

Let us specify that these sizes are approximate and that one finds under the name of “17  inches” of the screens going of 41 with 44  cm. The table of right-hand side gives some correspondences.

Also let us point out that the Penal code French prohibits the use of measuring units different from those established by the laws and Réglementation S in force (R643-2 article), this in order to guarantee information right of the customer; in fact, France is bound by the Convention of the Meter. The law is circumvented here skilfully, the number of inches indicating in fact a “class of apparatuses”, from where the noted elastic value of the “inch”.
