An alive country in autarky functions in closed economy. Conversely, a country having opened its commercial activity abroad has a open economy.

The purpose of autarky is principal as much as possible to reduce the expenditure to the importation, and thus to establish an economic equilibrium inside the country.

Historically, no State managed to establish a perfectly autarkical system, with share perhaps Japan at the 17th century when the trade was tiny room to only one port on an artificial island (island of Dejima) created in bay of Nagasaki at the western southern end of the Japan. The majority of the company are not self-sufficing, and all necessarily maintain the exchanges with their close and remote neighbors:

  • the Commerce of the salt is oldest and most frequent of the trade. Moreover, very rare are the countries which have on their ground of the majority the raw materials in sufficient quantity to provide for their own needs.

  • even the saving in countries called in situation of autarky by the closing of their borders outside for the civilians is qualified differently: for the North Korea, the model is the palatine economy, taking into account exchanges of subsistence with the China.

Locally, autarky also indicates a lifestyle in which a hearth produces all that it consumes, or at least essence, and does not resort thus or little to the trade to supplement.
