However, the two terms are used by the majorities of Australian, mainly by the adults. In some states, the TAFE (meaning " advanced education and technique"), is offered by the institutions like equivalence compared to the courses of the secondary. The TAFE is often used by the adults décrocheurs not having supplemented to them 12th year. There exist also private centers of education to the adults who offer to the décrocheurs to finish to them 12th year or to the students who décisent to improve their results of the " High School" with an aim of being selected at the university or of improving their chances of placememt.
Exact duration of the " secondary college" vary from one state to another. In the schools of News-Wales of the South and Victoria the studies last of 7th at the 12th year; whereas in Western Australia, with the Queensland, in the Territory of North and in southernmost Australia, étudent them extend from 8th to the 12th year.
The presence at the school is obligatory until the age of 17 years in Tasmanie, 16 years in the states of Victoria, southernmost Australia and Queensland and 15 years in all the other states and territories. The legislation of obligatory education was complicated by several initiatives on the level of the Commonwealth and the states. Several Australian requires that obligatory education with the age be replaced by obligatory education until obtaining the diploma: the pupils should thus remain at the school until the end of their last year or until obtaining their qualification, instead of being able quiter the school at the age prescribed.
