Ausone castle

The castle Ausone , is a wine field of 7 ha located at Saint-Émilion in the Gironde. In AOC St. Emilion, it is one of the two fields with the Château White Horse to be classified First classified great wine has in the last Classements of the wines of St. Emilion of 2006.

History of the field

The field owes its name to the poet Ausone, who would have had at the 4th century the Lucaniacum villa in Saint-Émilion according to some. Recent studies showed, that the villa was not with the site of the field but they show that the vintage of Ausone is one of oldest of the area.

After having led by various owners such as Mrs Lafargue and the family Dubois-Trawl-net, the castle is repurchased in 1996 by the Vauthier family. Alain Vauthier directs to him only the wine activities and it is helped by Michel Roland which applies its techniques to it.

The soil

The vineyard of Ausone develops on a ground argilo-limestone and a basement of Molasse. The vine has an average age 50 years. Encépagement is composed to 50% of Merlot and 50% of frank Cabernet.

The vineyard is located on an abrupt slope directed full south. It is surrounded in top of the slope of a belt of rocks which shelter it winds of north.

Ausone produces a second wine, the Vault of Ausone .
