History

The origin of Aurillac ( Aureliacum = villa of Aurelius) goes up at the time Gallo-Roman E, that of which attests the polygonal fanum of Aron builds with the I {{er}} century and discovered in 1977 in Lescudillier.

One can think that at the time Gallic, the primitive site of the city was on the heights which dominate the city with Saint-Jean-of-Gives (" Dône" = dunum) and that, like the majority of the oppida, it was abandoned after the Roman conquest with the profit of a new city established in the plain. With the return of the insecurity of the the Lower Empire, one attends the movement of castramerisation: a new strengthened site is established with semi-slope between old the oppidum and the old Gallo-Roman city, where is today the Saint-Etienne castle.

The history of the city is really known only from 856, year of birth of the Count Géraud, with the castle whose his/her father, also named Géraud, was the lord. Towards 885, this one founds a Abbaye Bénédictine which will bear its name later.

It is in this Monastère that Gerbert will study, first Pape French under the name of Sylvestre II.

The city was constituted on a territory of Sauveté which is located between four crosses and which were founded in 898 by Géraud shortly after the abbey. Of circular form, the first urban unit was made in the vicinity immediate of the Abbaye of Aurillac. Géraud dies towards 910 but its radiation is such in the population of Aurillac and the surroundings that with the wire of the centuries and still nowadays, Géraud is a first name of widespread Baptême.

It is at the thirteenth century that one starts with well knowing the municipal habits thanks to a conflict between the Consul S and the Abbé S. After the catch of the Château Saint-Etienne in 1255 and two awards called the Paix of Aurillac, the relations will be standardized.

With 13th and 14th centuries, Aurillac supports several seats against the English and at the sixteenth century, continuous to undergo the civil wars and nuns.

The influence of the abbey declines with its secularization and its setting in commende.

In 1569, the city delivered by treason to the Protesting S, tortured, held to ransom inhabitants and the awfully ransacked abbey. All its library and all its files are burned.

Before the Revolution, Aurillac shelters a Présidial and carries the title of capital of High-Auvergne. In 1790 with the creation of the departments, after one period of alternation with Saint-Flour, Aurillac becomes definitively the chief town of the Cantal.

It is the arrival of the Railway, in 1866, which accelerates the development of the city. With the first census, in 1759, Aurillac counted 6.268 inhabitants, it counts some today more than 30.000. Town of Fair S and Gone S, Aurillac is always a place of exchanges and trade, a city which makes reception a priority.
