Aurelius Victor
Sextus Aurelius Victor (towards 327 - towards 390) is a African , he was governor of Pannonia under the reign of Julien and became prefect of the City ( praefectus Urbi ) in 389. Three works were allotted to him: Origo gentis Romanae , the Liber of viris illustribus and a Liber of Caesaribus . Only this last is indeed of him. The others are anonymous.
Its Liber of Caesaribus is a series of imperial biographies (of Auguste to Constance II) written towards 360 and which is inspired, by the moralizing concern, of Salluste, Tacite and Suétone. Of exclusively civil career, Aurélius Victor employs readily a critical speech towards the army and the characters of military course.
He is imitated by an anonymous continuator who composes after 395 a work known under the name of Epitome of caesaribus.
