Aups
Aups (called Z' AUP in Of Provence of Standard mistralienne deciding Zaou ) is a common French, chief town of the Canton of Aups located in the department of the Var and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. Named Capital of the High-VAr and Capital of the truffle . Its inhabitants are called Aupsois (formerly Aulpins).
Geography
Aups with 500m of altitude is located at the doors of the the Verdon on the first buttresses of the the Alps ( Aups = " Alpes" in Occitan).Located at the foot of the Mountain of Espiguières (880m), rampart of tuff bored of many caves and swallow-holes of which Holy-Magdeleine and Plérimond, and of a fertile plate sprinkled by the torrent of Grave.
Located at 60km of the sea and 80km of the ski stations, the city lives in a very healthy Climat, of Mediterranean style. The vegetation is primarily made up of pines of Alep, holm oaks and pubescent for truffle growing and of olive-trees in plain (forest of Huchanes, of the valley of Espiguière, Pelenq…). Starting from 700m of altitude, on the alpine mountains in the north of the commune, the woodland Pines, garrigues, boxwood and kermes oak thrive there. They is mountains are in particular the Cuguyons (995m) registered in the blazon of the village, the mountains of the vaults Notre-Dame de Liesse (985m) and Saint-Priest (1077m). The commune is integrated in the Regional natural park of the Verdon since 2000.
History
- the village was formerly called Oppidum of Alpibus then castrum of Alpibus, castrum of Almis, then Alps and finally Aups. It was occupied by the Oxybiens during the Roman epoch, with the site of the plate of Saint-Marc (on the Via Aurelia energy of Fréjus ( Forum Julii ) to Riez ( Forum Reii ). Jules César passed there to conquer Gaulle and he would have said “I prefer being first with Aups that to be second in Rome”. All around the village, one found traces of this Roman presence, like an old hospital and milliary columns in particular around the Plan of Canjuers whose name comes from Campus Julii or camp of Jules César.

King Rene set up Aups in baillie independent, by detaching the community of the baillie of Barjols of which it formed part. One year later it was to fall down in the authority of the latter until François I {{er}} decided to do an independent district, by letters given in 1533.

the old noble chapter of Valmoissine was transferred to Aups by the pope Alexandre IV in 1499.

Then again by the Huguenots of the baron of Germany-in-Provence in particular in 1574 where they plundered the village and massacred 18 Aulpins. A " virgin of the massacre" was set up on the place of torture located in the street of the Clock. The city has also sudden slaughters during the French revolution.

the Viguerie of Aups was dominated since the Year Millet by the ducal family of Blacas d' Aulps, big family historical of the area. However, following a lawsuit begun downtown 1346 and which will last nearly four centuries between the dukes of Blacas and the village of Aups, obtains into 1712 to depend juridically only on the king de France. One melted then a bell, still visible today in the Campanile of the tower of the Clock. This bell carries the inscription " I am the joy of everyone " to keep in memory these days of jubilation which marked this victory.

Aups was the center of the republican of the department of Var insurrection against the coup d'etat of Napoleon III in 1851, from which its nickname comes from " Center VAr Rouge". The repression ordered by colonel Pastoureau arrived at Aups on December 10th and is devoted to a true hunting to the man. An obelisk was set up in honor of the many republicans died on the place Louis Martin " Bidouré" , hero of this rebellion which was carried out 2 times, as well as a mausoleum in the cemetery of the commune.

Aups is the turntable of the High VAr, the tourist influence of the gorges of the Verdon and the lake of Holy Cross brings many tourists in particular for his famous market of Provence held Wednesday and Saturday morning.

Economic life in the past
It seems that there no was really speciality which would have made the fame of Aups. However, there were many Tannerie S (from where the street of the Tanners), Sériciculture, factories of hats and factories of tiles in the old lime kilns.
Blazon
- Of azure with three money " mountains; Cuguyons " , with the chief of mouths with three flowers of gold lily, 2 and 1, with this currency: LIVES EVERYWHERE.
The flowers of lily were conceded by the king Louis XIV in 1700. In the top of the blazon a formed crown of three turns appears, which means that it is a chief town of canton. Below the blazon the Military Cross with palms appears because the city was a high place of Resistance at the time of the 2nd World war.
Personalities related to the commune
Part of the ducal family of Blacas d' Aulps, lords of the viguery of Aulps, was born in Aups and Vérignon of which:- Pierre d' Aulps (born in Aups in?) First of the family of Blacas, resulting from the House of the Beams. He enjoyed in Provence a reputation honesty and nobility which returned it referee of all the quarrels between high barons. He took several times the weapons to support the rights of the Seigneurs of the Beams. He passed out of Holy Land and on its return in 1120, he founded the chapter of Valmoissine close to Aups (the convent cistercian was moved in Aups in 1629).
- Blacas de Blacas III known as " large the guerrier" (born in Aups in 1160 - died in 1235). Small son of Pierre d' Aulps, Lord of Aups, Vérignon, Baudinard, Carros, Châteauneuf, Thorenc, Tourtour, and other villages. He was as well excellent warrior and good troubadour. He was distinguished among the most valiant knights from the court from the count Raimond Bérenger IV from Provence. He married Laure of Castellane. He died in Rome in Italy.
- Boniface de Blacas (born in Aups in 1221 and died after 1241) Wire of Blacas de Blacas. Lord of Aups, Baudinard, Aiguines and Thouars. He married Ayceline de Moustiers.
- Blacas de Blacas IV known as: " Blacasset" (born about 1240 in Aups and died about 1300) Wire of Boniface de Blacas, Knight and lord of Aups. It accompanied Charles Ier by Anjou to Naples. Its name was immortalisé by Frederic Mistral which allotted the installation of the chain to him which connects the two rocks of Moustiers-Holy-Marie. Captured by the infidels, Blacasset had made the wish, if it were free, of tightening this chain and suspending star with sixteen branches there, emblem of its family.
- Casimir de Blacas d' Aulps (born with Vérignon in 1775 - died with Vienna (Austria) in Austria in 1839. It was the main thing adviser of Louis XVIII.
Other personality were born and lived in Aups:
- Small Pierre (born in Aups in 1831 and died in 1910), he was one of most eminent photographers of the 19th century. It is the first to have photographed sovereign pontiff: Black and white IX.
- The general Jean-Baptiste Girard (born in Aups in 1775 and died in 1815 during the Battle of Waterloo). It engaged at seventeen years in the army and died on the field of Bataille of Waterloo. He was general commander of the Legion of honor, par of France and duke of Ligny.
- Jules Auguste César Muraire known as Raimu had a country house beside the convent of the Ursulines, of the torrent the Low register and of the tomb of the dukes of Blacas, the large majestic garden is visible since the road D 957 energy towards the lake of Holy-Cross and Moissac-Bellevue.
- John Ronald Reuel Tolkien had also a house of holidays close to the downtown area.
