Aukena
Aukena is the fourth larger island of the Îles Gambier in French Polynésie. Being 2,5 km long on 0,5 km broad, Aukena is located at 5 km in the south-east of Mangareva and culminates to 198 Mr. It was discovered by James Wilson in 1797. One can see there vestiges of the period missionary, of which the church Saint Raphaël built in 1839, the stone first, as well as the Tour of guet, being used as benchmark in the south-west of the island. Moreover, Aukena is famous to have one of most beautiful beaches of white Sable of the Polynésie as well as old a view-point where the last deposed king, Gregorio, came to contemplate his kingdom christianized. Currently about thirty people lives in the only hamlet of Aukena, Purirau.
