Auguste Viatte

Auguste Viatte (June 27th 1901 - November 21st 1993) was a man of letters Canadian, French and Swiss.

Born with Porrentruy in the Canton from the Jura in Switzerland, it obtains its doctorate at the twenty years age to the Université of Freiburg on the bonds between the Catholicisme and the Romantisme.

After having supplemented its studies by a Doctorate of State to the Sorbonne in 1927 it starts to travel and becomes French in the Années 1930. It Marie with Marie-Louise Claro in 1932; he knew it with the Social Teams in Paris.

Viatte taught with New York, Hunter College, Private school of the High Studies, 1942-1944, with Basle, the Université Laval of Quebec, with Nancy, Zurich then with Paris.

In 1934, it is recommended by the French Academician Georges Goyau for the literary pulpit of the Université Laval, which it preserves until in 1949.

During the Second world war, it belongs to the French established in Canada and the United States which, supporting the de Gaulle General in the free France, is opposed to the marshal Pétain.

In Quebec it publishes in the catholic Action , the National action and the New Changing . A.Viatte is one of the signatories of the Manifeste of the European catholic intellectuals in America - heading " In front of the crisis mondiale" - that it wrote with his colleague of the University Laval Charles De Koninck, the R.P. Joseph Delos and the philosopher Jacques Maritain.

Viatte develops a relation with Haiti and the Louisiana, is interested in the Creole and corresponds with the CODOFIL. During the years 1950,1960 and 1970 he is member of France-Canada, then takes part in the creation of France-Quebec and France-Haiti. Viatte is also the creator of the Prix France-Quebec

It has until its death of the frequent exchanges with the General delegation from Quebec in Paris. He is the friend of the writer Maurice Lebel of which he was the colleague at the Laval University.

In 1971, as President of Association French Culture , it writes with Georges Pompidou, President of the Republic, to express its fears vis-a-vis the entry of the Great Britain in the Common Market, seeing a danger to the French language there.

Viatte keeps its contacts with the Jurassic popular Université and it tackles the question of the Jurassic Séparatisme with Roland Béguelin.

He dies in Paris in 1993. Funds Auguste-Viatte is preserved at the Files of the Canton of the Jura and the cantonal Bibliothèque, in Porrentruy in Switzerland.
