After one period when he taught in France and in the Netherlands, he became German professor at the School of the High Commercial Studies and the Arago School.

Its contribution in cryptology

Its test military Cryptography (1883) constitutes a reference of the Cryptographie 19th century. At the time, the essential concern of the cryptographes was to set up a protected network of telegraphy.

Its work what is called presents today the Principe of Kerckhoffs in strategic cryptography, which was regarded as a military science. The rules which it states to ensure a confidential communication are:

  • a data should not in no case to be able to be deciphered without the knowledge of its key.

  • the interlocutors should not undergo damage if the system of coding would be revealed.
  • the key must be simple and modifiable with wish.
  • the cryptograms must be transportable, i.e. télégraphiables.
  • the apparatus of coding and the documents must be transportable.
  • the system must be simple of use.
  • the system of figuring must be examined by experts as a preliminary.

These rules are still valid if one carries out a careful interpretation of the current problems. The single-ended spanner would be today rather a Password or a PINE. The transportability became commonplace today with regard to the software, but it remains a challenge for the material.

Its contribution to linguistics

Kerckhoffs was some time General secretary of French Association for the propagation of the Volapük and propagated this international language initially in France, then in several countries. It publishes in 1886, a complete course of Volapük, in which it proposes simplifications, then a Volapük dictionary - French. Its will to reform the volapük causes quarrels with its creator, Johann Martin Schleyer, which lead to a schism within the movement volapukist.

He wrote moreover un" Examination criticizes Musical Language Universlle de Sudre"
