Auguste-François Maunoury is a Helléniste and Exégète French, born with Champsecret (Orne) on October 30th 1811 and died in Sées (Orne) on November 17th 1898.
Biography
It carried out brilliant traditional studies with the preparatory seminar with Séez, establishment in which it returned after its theological studies and where it passed the totality of its sacerdotal long career. Until 1852, he taught the traditional letters with a great success, and became professor of rhetoric, a position which he occupied during twenty-two years. For this period, according to progress of the hellenistic studies in France and Germany, it composed, published, and revised work (“Grammar of the Greek Language”; “Chrestomathie” etc) which revealed it to be one of the best specialists in the Greek of his time.
About 1866, Maunoury began its work as a commentator of the Scriptures, by treating some sections of the Gospel in the “Catholic Week” of its diocese of origin; but it is only after 1875, qu ' it was given entirely to the continuation of the biblical studies. In 1877, he became canon of the cathedral of Séez; and the following year, it started to publish its comments on all the Epistles of New Testament.
These comments are appeared in five volumes, as follows: (1) “Comments on the Epistles with the Romans” (Paris, 1878); (2) “Comments on the two Epistles with the Corinthians” (Paris, 1879); (3) “Comments on the Epistles with Gallates, Ephésiens, Phillippiens, Colossiens, and Thessaloniciens” (Paris, 1880); (4) “Comments on the Epistles with Timothée, Tite, Philémon, the Hebrews” (Paris, 1882); (5) “Comments on the Catholic Epistles of St Jacques, St Pierre, St Jean and St Jude” (Paris, 1888). By explaining the crowned text, there made an excellent use of its great knowledge of Greek grammar and authors, made use mainly of the comments of saint Jean Chrysostome and Théodoret, and always remained an enlightened and sure theologist. In 1894, it published its “COM. in Psalmos” (2 flights., Paris), a Latin work, written with elegance, almost exclusively on the basis of of the Vulgate and Seventy. Its only contribution to apologetic is a volume entitled “Evenings of autumn or the Religion proven to the society peoples” (Paris, 1887).
